this the final frontier these are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise its five-year mission to explore new worlds to seek out new life and new civilizations to boldly go all right so should we just should we get started before too many other things happen yeah absolutely okay let's get started where are we where do we leave off last time last time we left off with tomorrow is yesterday one of my least favorite episodes of the season okay hey oh wait wait before we get started you know maybe we should say here we are hi I'm John Anson I'm Roy Moore okay cool let's move on then okay tomorrow is yesterday your least favorite and yeah that wasn't a wonderful conversation we had about that so let's put that behind us yes a little bit next next up court-martial right do you remember this one very well this one was what I remember kind of liking it at the time but I don't really remember too much about it all I remember is that had something to do with some kind of a court okay so here's the deal um Captain Kirk one of the crew members is one of his friends but I guess there's some kind of fight between them at some point and I can't remember what it was over but there's supposed to be hard feelings between them and so this guy is out in what like the escape pod or something yeah and if you don't show that it would have really helped to tell what he was in the probe thing the probable gain and he was more susceptible to damage wherever he was yeah and just like an ion start with something right and so the idea is that at some point if if if the situation it just gets too bad there's nothing the Captain Kirk can do and I get to save the ship you have to sacrifice the probe but you can only do that after going into Red Alert right right yes and that all we had these court things these will court things we have to bear the evidence here so the problem is the the evidence shows very clearly video evidence that as in Kirk never went into retinoid before he decided to abandon this uh this probe now this is an interesting episode and of course that the sages of the days uh is Spock will get up to that later but so there's a big court-martial going on in which Captain Kirk is in serious trouble and the evidence is really really against him and but he sticks to his guns he knows he's right and and all that sort of stuff well what gets me about this episode is this crazy crazy video evidence where on earth is he coming from because it expected he they must just have someone walking around the starship in the camera constantly filming so I was one of those liberties that TV seems to take a lot of it but um it was pretty extreme in this case I'm doing you understand what I'm talking about yeah yeah because it shows footage of just Kirk's hand yeah III can kind of see it the way our society is going now everybody has cameras everywhere like on their phones and everything and it's whoever can capture the footage like maybe 300 years from now that's going to be the thing to do always make sure your camera's going cuz you never know when the next big scoop is going to be because everybody wants to get into it it's like everybody's Big Brother you know that's right or was a little off on that you know it's not this centralized thing you know but we're all being observed but not by a big brother we're being observed by everybody else and so maybe 300 years in the future it's going to reach that scale but I see where you're coming from there's no yeah they have a professional camera just on its console yeah I think there must also be a couple of sky cams floating around the music are from the NFL because the camera angles are just a really a probable location well it worked then the thing that got me about this episode is okay so they think Kirk may have murdered this guy that he had a grudge with and so they have a court-martial and the lawyer they get current apparently they just can't stop talking about how awesome of a lawyer he is and but his technique is very SPECT he never cross-examines he never does anything at all but he knows what are you doing right he knows what he's doing and ultimately of course Kirk gets off but nothing that genius lawyer did he do anything pretty much waited and waited until until Mikoyan spot bursts in with new evidence and that was his whole plan even though he had no idea that existed yeah you kinda you're kind of like to think okay this lawyers got something up to sleep otherwise we would at least cross them well that's not the case he just he just doesn't have a case that's all you've just got bad hips or something you know stand up that's a whole deal and he made a big point about saying books are way better than computers I have a computer I'll flip it on and I have access to everything but I don't like it and he flips it back off may have booked a tiling everywhere in there like books is how strange books books I don't know what kind of point that is because I mean books on computer books physical yeah the info is the same right we also Kirk Don's his casual green shirt in this did you know that notice that mmm no I mean I know there's a couple different variations about of the respective it is working itself so what were you going to say I cut you off without lame casual shirt reference that's okay it was perfectly fine a reference um I was just going to say that I'm going to have to side with a he GaN Spengler as he was quoted as saying that the Prince Edward is dead oh yeah prince is dead yeah what smokes that's what I say now the prosecutor of course really hot prosecutors is used to be a romantic interest of Captain Kirk so shouldn't you have to recuse herself as far as there being a conflict of interest I guess not I guess not in the enlightened courts of tomorrow yeah who knows how it works I mean because at this point they still didn't they still don't have the all the Starfleet vernacular all all sorted out everything yeah okay so how does this all work out there's overwhelming evidence and the SIS computers are never wrong what happens Spock is finally playing the gears as Spock loves that chest doesn't he yeah and now what's interesting about the chess the computer playing chess is the spot program - right and so spots should never be able to beat it because I mean couldn't possibly out logic himself but spot does beat it like three or four times right right and so you took all that time to figure out he was kind of casually doing Edwin right just right up before the verdict he is casually playing a bunch of chess Oh interesting when they say though the whole point of court martial is that the star evidence against Kirk is the computer and computers never make mistakes there they are never in error you know I'm kind of I'm kind of surprised that they're like you know we get syntax errors all the time couldn't computers be an air you know but that's never their mind but I guess I guess Microsoft is doing a lot better in the 23rd century and I just surprised it that they never say you know what maybe the computer is wrong because every sci-fi book I've ever read is about computers going crazy and killing people maybe they shouldn't be maybe we shouldn't put our entire welfare into their hands but yeah whatever work area so that was also interesting uses spot walks in and his testimony of I'd be the computer chess that I shouldn't be allowed to do that that's accepted whoa you write one thing I don't understand is why Spock is so bad at chess the further that Spock actually won a match of chances is a big deal you'd think he'd win all the time I mean looking at how I mean don't you think it's kind of weird that it every time Kirk and Spock play chess Kirk just wastes Spock does that seem very very strange box should really beat hurt but I guess Spock is just sucks at chess for some weird reason I guess so yeah there's a surprise to a baby what's a surprise with any surprise twist ending is that there was no debt that's right he's still alive and he still hates kirb by golly he hates him and so in a telltale heart type method there's got to be a better way to find somebody but they're like let's have the ship's computer listen to all the heartbeats on the ship and slowly eliminate each one until until we you know we know who they are and they find him by his heartbeat ya know no heat sensations or no you know no sensor readings or anything it's just let's just listen to his heartbeat even those breathe into something much louder yeah well what can you so Kirk gets off and I can I can remember how its result of being the Kirk is acquitted yeah Kirk's acquitted in the the fabulous lawyer guy who's so impressive decides to represent the guy that tried to frame Kirk the guy who still good yeah so pretty interesting we got a we we suddenly have a law and order type episode but there's a trial and surprise twist and very little to do with space beside the ion storm and and those initial circumstances but you know a different episode kind of okay oh okay now I'm getting excited because we're going to talk about return the art comes the wine really getting excited is because of the episode after that I won't touch upon yet but episode 22 is perhaps the most important episode of the first season and perhaps I'm going to just kind of say this you know I haven't faced a second or watch the third but maybe the most important episode of the original series will be over that admit you obviously haven't seen Spock's brain yet because I thought that was one of the words that is a trap I guess you did your research well well let it rise all right okay now that I return of the archons which actually happens to be one of my favorite episodes yeah it's like it's like Star Trek omegamin almost yeah yeah it is you know you love your own Mega Man you referenced Omega Man when we talked about the episode Miri personally I like this episode the point of this episode is the crew goes down and they go in disguise and it kind of starts interesting I have Sulu and some other guy there in there in there in different clothing they're there in disguise and they're just running from someone and they in someone comes in and attacks some and captures them or something and that's how the episode starting immediately you're like a lot turns out this planet is run by this computer that's controlling the populace right is that that how it goes Landrieu Landrieu and I haven't launched this episode in a few months but if you remember right this is the particular episode that I wrote about on my blog because these people are controlled by computer I I think they're controlled severely throughout the week is that correct but then once a week for one hour they have what's called a red hour where they click they go nuts they start making their like each other it's more like an entire night maybe maybe it's an entire night they call it red hour but I guess I guess it's longer than an hour huh nom and they start looting and they start punching each other and they start yelling and and they just kind of go crazy you know like they're at a big huge you know debauchery party and then they just kind of carry on and I I thought it was really really interesting because that particular aspect didn't really have anything to do with the plot the plot is that the people are controlled by computer and Kirk breaks the computer spell but this this whole read our thing it's not really explained very well but it's it's kind of supposed that the computer couldn't control them completely there had to be some kind of pressure valve so that their minds wouldn't explode from being controlled and so they had to kind of release all the tension and all the aggravation and and all that stuff that's building inside of them so that they can be more easily controlled leaders that kind of what you thought about it yeah I guess I'm going to have to do what you thought because I remember looking back now that there's the big whatever they call the red our rep celebration I don't whatever and then I remember thinking why on earth was that II was necessary but that seems to make sense it's I mean it's a really docile control community is a-- that maybe you kind of go crazy for that so now maybe that is the release this is my real life application to this i haven't talked to you about this but you and I to the same University Brigham Young University church school on our code a lot of people would say oppressive way to lose your college life because you know I mean we couldn't even we can have girls over past midnight and stuff like that you know no drinking and smoking you know and as religious people that's not wasn't difficult for us or anything but you know most people on the outside but look at that it's kind of kind of oppressive and rigid and controlled but I have this theory when I want to return the archons I saw red hour I'm like you know what red hour is red hour is Latin dancing classes at BYU I figured as a scavenger on no no no the where you go you do all the sexy stuff you you pretty much have this dry humping session with this girl and and everybody does it everybody takes dancing but I don't think you and I ever took dancing right did you ever know we didn't yeah yeah we never did but everybody we knew took dancing and that was like that one class every week I think was the BYU red hour where everything I know you you rub up against someone else and that's kind of that's kind of how I how I interpreted read our and there's you know that pressure valve they got that an elevation that sexual aggravation out and then they were able to go on and and continue to you know kind of be low-key get this at this university is ranked last in parties and Playboy magazine I think yeah well interestingly enough apparently the dance teams that are at our university or very good or read our because I mean like the ballroom and the salsa dance teams that they're constantly taking national championships and going on world tours and stuff like that so I guess we're really good at our release valve yeah yeah we are good but you know we know we're top the the other the other cool thing I thought about unreturned the archons is I thought this was kind of interesting because they have these kind of outside things that they didn't have to do but they made them a little bit more interesting one of them was red hour and the other one is the resistance that Kirk comes across usually in the episodes like this Kirk has to convince someone they're all mine trilby like oh I don't know what's going on teaches more of this love or teaches more about feeling for ourselves but they're already there there's some kind of resistance going on and they're kind of in the works and so Kirk is able to help the resistance the resistance is kind of cool because they each have each member of the resistance has like a contact or two other contacts and one of them they don't know what they look like or who they are because that would compromise the intelligence if one of them was captured they wouldn't be able to what the secret's out and so there was like a lot of secrecy and planning and it was it was kind of interestingly organized this resistance thing and I thought I was really cool yeah yeah I was pretty enticing yeah helpful for you we're Captain Kirk in a gang calm and then but you kind of get to the point where Captain Kirk says okay it's go time and a lot of members of resistance are still pretty hesitant and maybe one it's nice your minds but in the end now Craig me if I'm wrong but don't don't they confront the computer and do they out logic the computer and it ends up having to destroy itself like so many Star Trek episodes um you know honestly even though I talk about how much I love this episode I can't remember how they get the computer they either put it in a logic loop Kirk comes up to the computer and says computer define love or he does not ever yes I can't remember yeah you may in turn destroy it physically or give it something that it can calculate or or they convinced that the computer that since the computer is trying to keep order that that can the computer must be the sense of the the source of disorder and so the computer must destroy itself or something like that so that seems to happen on a on a pretty regular basis I think Captain Kirk and the crew basically got how to handle a computer overlords down pat so yeah yeah and also um a little trivia about this episode another thing that doesn't really matter is that they're investigating the disappearance of a ship called the Archon and in return the archons represents the the enterprise because these people were hoping for kind of saviors and they almost got it with with that ship that disappeared with this but the Archon wasn't accessible like the enterprise was but they obviously tried to do the same thing and also Ben Stiller named his production company red hour after this episode okay I've kind of motioning oh by the way I tivo'd Cable Guy today and so I'm looking forward to watching that because you said there's a big Star Trek reference in that so I want to watch that uh yeah when you wait when they go to medieval times we will talk about that when we see a that's probably next time down season two and didn't do that's right alright so the next next episode here if you're ready is a Spacey this is the one I reference previously and John even though I'm not a Star Trek fan I gotta say that I had goosebumps when I watched this episode so what the enterprise stumbles upon this spaceship from Earth and all these people are in suspended animation and the first person they release from animation is low and behold John is con-com business con from from the Wrath of Khan Star Trek 2 thing which most people well a majority of people I think argue is the best Star Trek film but you you haven't seen yet because you haven't seen any of the movie damn right that's right I'm yeah that'll happen after I finished the first three seasons so so I'm looking forward to that in fact the end of the episode leaves it off and anyway we'll talk about it so what happens is the what's the name of the UM the ship is named after like a penal colony right yes the ship is called botany bay Botany Bay Australia you know okay alright so the ship is comprised of all these people who are kind of genetically enhanced and on earth since they were these genetically enhanced beings they became like rulers and overlords and the earth was in this big state of war and all these people were trying to take control and in the end I guess a lot of them got together and three resulting suspended animation in and left earth and so now they're reanimated and it sounds like a recipe for trouble John certainly does Jr yeah there are they're all reanimate but let me just get one thing straight that kind of confused me okay okay they meet a guy named Khan and they give them access to all the tech manuals in the ship and then right just shortly after that there's kind of having a little chat they remember this character in the late 90s 1996 if you remember which is which is pretty hilarious twelve years ago Khan controlled a quarter of do you remember that you remember that at all that's kind of yeah kind of trouble time must have been watching TV at that time um but anyway shortly after they give him access to all be every single tech manual every important aspect of information on the ship they say hey you know what there's this guy Khan Noonien Singh as his name and he was a ruthless dictator who could control like 1/8 or 1/4 or 1/5 of the world or something like that oh that's kind of that's interesting that's interesting um but yes it's he's from this era when when tyrants were ruling the earth and I don't know why I don't know what they were thinking I mean were they just did they just assume oh he's from Earth he's cool he's cool I don't know John sometimes that I guess they just hard the mosa said to the logical people but of course Khan reads the tech manual then he very quickly takes over control the whole ship doesn't he yep he has the ship the ship is his there's nothing Kirk can do there's only one thing that that Khan underestimated and that was the woman who loves him wasn't for her turning on him then then Khan would he would still be in the enterprise flying around conquering the galaxy why you should never trust women John yeah pickle and they look and they lie yeah yeah she's never trust women she was pretty funny because and I talked about this last time about how there's always some crew member he was an expert on what's going on she have some weird reason the enterprise is carrying around an expert on earth history from 200 years earlier and oh and Curtis is like a what's he says kind of a funny throwaway line when they when they beam over to the botany Bay's like ah get that historian what's-her-name get her doing something for a change because apparently she's just been in her quarters painting this whole time wondering what to do but she has this weakness that she gets completely infatuated with world dictators from the past and oh my god the opportunity that she comes across here pretty pretty odds the situation for specific weaknesses you've got it so I mean all events of really weird happening was going on in this episode but other than that oh my gosh this one's so good Ricardo Montalban is so good yeah wasn't he just great wasn't he just awesome didn't you just love every single thing he said yeah no he he's pretty sweet yet you know I think of him and star trek in during the 60s and also during the sixties of course you've got the Adam West Batman show and it plays the Joker it's up one of the other Latin lovers what's the guy's name who's - Joker that Cesar Romero either Romero where we used to shave his mustache and instead just has a bunch of white makeup case it was my best so they were all getting in all that on TV action - Ricardo Montalban I think ends up with the the more memorable spot there and anyway certainly more closing character definitely and we're going to talk a lot a lot about this guy I mean do Star Trek I can't wait to do Star Trek - I didn't tell you this but I want to do a film commentary a running commentary of Star Trek - okay when we talk about that so keep that in mind keep that in mind I don't know what else to say about this except Khan is is five times stronger and ten times smarter than Kirk but by golly Kirk beats him in the fight and that's how it ends because I think that's right yeah because Courtney were to pull out the the condiments quarter saying that just kind of came out of the wall and he's able to throttle Khan with that nuts and that's how that's how it happened and so what they do is they actually they maroon kaanum on Ceti alpha so four or five or five or six it those numbers mean something those numbers mean something in Star Trek - wait till you get there but can't member which one it was great it was it was great was great in the great episode what do you think it was a great episode he was one of those ones where like oh there's good coming down the road importantly the final word and on the episode is wouldn't it be interesting to meet the people he's planted a hundred years from now and see what becomes of them and of course John that semi pathetic because we're definitely asleep again so yeah a hundred years later yet alright well not quite not quite content type that thing Kirby stages really well so episode number 23 is it taste of Armageddon and then let's see if I can remember this the enterprise arrived did have planning to establish diplomatic relations and finding itself in the middle of peaceful war the translation okay yeah so this is interesting in agent this is the two planets right where they've been at war planets are at war with each other forever but the war is all computer simulated and they simply calculate fatalities and the calculated fatalities are ordered to show but like incinerators and they all show up they all show up willingly right right and so now I think I'm not I'm not quite sure but I think this episode is kind of a commentary on the neutron bomb because wasn't the neutron bomb developed because a lot of a lot of world leaders are in Europe were worried because like okay if war breaks out and things like the Colosseum are destroyed and and all these like historical science that have all this meaning you know how horrible that beam so the neutron bomb was developed to just give off radiation and kill all humans but leave all the buildings intact yeah okay yeah and that's I guess that's one of the reasons these two plants agreed to this is because oh no they volunteered and no adults or no infrastructure is being destroyed in fact they get there then it looks beautiful and it looks peaceful and people are walking around and yet they're supposed to be at war so there's a problem with this though when when when you're waging this peaceful type of war since it's not as horrific as real war the result is that it just goes on indefinitely whereas if you were fighting a war that was as terrible and horrific as real war was then you would be more inclined to seek a solution to end the war and that's Kirk's thinking and so what is what is Kirk do I at some point he sabotages something or something I don't know but but a real attack is launched and so these two planets are actually at the end that they're finally engaged in real war with the hope that that will end the conflict much younger than the never ending simulated yes yep and that's what happens and well it's kind of funny because they just kind of leave yeah they're like okay let's let's plunge these people into this real bloody intergalactic war and let's get out of here sure everything will work out why can't we uh you know who knows maybe this minted planets completely eradicated each other it's kind of kind of a big gamble I mean it's a hypothetically the hypothesis of the whole thing makes sense that if that if they if they make it not easy for them as far as the war goes that they're gonna have more of a reason to stop the war but then at the same time maybe it just got a lot worse like a really really lot worse so I'd like to see a sequel to this episode see what happens yeah notice that there was didn't you say that the Spock never used a Vulcan nerve pinch in the first season I know I said that I never saw him use the hand symbol in the first season the oh the hands can pick it look up mother Cameron I swear I didn't okay no I'm IRA please because yeah he's been using the nerve pinch a lot I just I made note that he did it he did it in this episode Mike and I cheered a little bit yeah no I swear no Vulcan V with the hand in the entire first season I swear no no I think you're right I think you're right I think you're right um Wow Josh what else do I have to say about taste of Armageddon I'm actually pleased with how succinctly and quickly we covered a fairly important episode yeah well I I guess it was one of those we got the concept down good I don't know what I was going to say about this seems like I was going to say something else but I can't remember the words hard to get the awful taste of Armageddon doubt of your mill yeah I was going to say something else about that I'll come back to it so I come back to that later I don't know you're welcome to come back to it okay cool okay next one aha this is an interesting episode this side of paradise this is an interesting episode because the only time the entire season we see Spock act like a normal human being hmm right for though so they land on this planet I believe this planet is supposed to be uninhabitable right they don't expect to find any people at all everyone should be dead right right yeah because well they have some scientific scientific gaseous thing everybody should be dead on the planet that's right but instead they get there and it's this planet of people and then there's a settlement there and there's a girl there who recognizes Spock right they know each other yeah it kind of sounded like they used to date unsuccessfully obviously I don't know how many dates she would have gone out with spa before she realized hey this guy isn't giving me any kind of response at all but she did like on earth some time but now now that she's got him on her planet you've got a solution so the reason all these people are surviving is because there's this plant that sprays these spores at you even when you get hit with a spore that it protects you from the gas on the planet that would otherwise kill you but it also has the side effect that what does it do it just makes you perfectly happy and irresponsible and there's something else too and what I kind of relate it to okay you remember the Odyssey yes you read The Odyssey right huh I was supposed to in college I didn't but I remember the next day when I didn't read the Odyssey and we had the discussion in class about this specific episode of of the Lotus Eaters and how it's almost like a society where they they enjoy what they're doing so much that they don't progress and and that just involves them completely and it's what the Lotus Eaters in in the Odyssey was and that's kind of a lot of people relate that to you know like a marijuana type culture really and hit these and stuff like that and you know maybe it was like some kind of concern in the 60s and they wanted to make a point that you know a lot of the drug culture was nothing more than that it didn't enable people to go beyond that and I think that's kind of what this episode is is referencing you kind of happy you content but but nothing more we were discussing this side of paradise in and one of the points you brought up you said yes it really cooled it to mention but one of the points is brought up is that everyone done there's really happy everyone seems to be doing just fine Spock even disobeys orders from Kirk and he's really happy at you showing an alternate of course the girl thinks that because they're kind of in love with each other now that you can actually feel emotion but the point is is that they're so happy and at peace with the way everything's going they're not getting anything done nothing there's no progression they're not fulfilling their mission them trying to cultivate the island is you're just kind of frozen in in happy land mm-hmm yeah so so Kirk takes upon himself to save up this just won't do and so like a like a mean stepfather he he you know changes that he kicks him out or something he does something what did he do how do they solve this today do they kill the spores or does he just get him off the ship better dang it I thought I don't know either I know that hurts Kirk doesn't like it changes it I don't remember what he does maybe he talks to the spores and he Logix them into destroying himself like I don't know like um we can't remember how many of these episodes end oh man have these in-depth conversations about him where like this means this and this means this and this was so unique but yeah what happened in it again I don't know how we're tending to being hurry John IMDB yeah ya know I should know what I wanted to say about this particular episode though a couple of just hilarious things that actually made me laugh out loud when I saw it is is it starts out just like any other normal episode right and I'm like starting to throw out the Star Trek cliches as they're happening they beam down they meet the people and then shows the woman in the soft light with the Vaseline on the lens and everything goodbye elliptical and she just gazing at somebody and I'm like okay now you cut the Kirk right no wrong it cuts immediately to Spock after that and I was just like what what someone someone someone dropped the ball there because you're supposed to cut the Kirk right after you introduce the girl and so didn't didn't you think it was kind of funny when I cut immediately to Spock and she somehow had a relationship with this guy no I didn't I didn't give it as much as you did but no Union in retrospect thinking of that way that that generally is and I don't know Kirk really gets around the galaxy because it does seem like like every single planet they end up on he runs into a girl that used to be a love interest of hidden of course the incongruity of that actually being someone that belongs to the Spock this time he was supposed to not be capable of romantic relationships so so interesting anecdote that was that was really interesting and and different yeah it was also the woman on the show her the actress who plays her at the time Charles Bronson was her boyfriend just kind of a funny thing to think about is that he actually hung out on the set during the make-out scenes between Spock and her just to make sure everything went down okay I guess he apparently intimidated Leonard Nimoy quite a bit and also I did he didn't clean house yes replica house I don't know but I think everybody was everybody is waiting for it you know he just kind of had that he kind of had that Charles Bronson squint and everybody just kind of had to walk around him and and he almost took down all of Star Trek production I just know it just thinking about it just makes me laugh really hard like a lot like in my sleep and everything anyway that's mostly all I wanted to say about this other than I thought I kind of had the uniform thing figured out like Kirk is like administrative command right I mean so he has the gold uniform Spock is kind of the science science guy so in like science and medical they kind of have the blue uniform right you know that seems kind of how the trend is going and then the maintenance and security has the red uniform but the biologist that being down with them he had a gold uniform and that threw everything off for me and so now I'm wondering if if the color of the influence doesn't matter at all yeah I've tried many times to interpret the significance of the color of these uniforms and I'm sure that we could look it up online something's got a great theory but uh yeah sure we can bother to do that but strangely after three weeks of doing this and wondering about it I haven't done it yet well that'll have to be this island we need stairs second on the second episode but uh moving on John to the devil in the dark one of my least favorite episode well it's funny you should say that because according to the IMDB trivia this is Shatner's favorite episode yeah I don't know or if it just was a guy in the in the blanket like underneath the blanket crawling on the ground in a monster work we're special effects than the movie Judge John [Music] something it was it was it was terrible so they get to this planet me miners are being murdered off like nobody's business and then they just uh don't think have an answer for and so Captain Kirk comes down they find one of these creatures and they injure it and of course Spock does the mind meld with the murderous creature and it turns out that the creatures are are they feeling threatened because their space is being overtaken or something I don't know but but they're they're just a creature this particular creature is the last one okay and and it's it's laid all these eggs and the miners are like Kirk says you remember he picks up that globe things like hey what is this or spot those or somebody and they're like ah this is silicon deposit there are tons of them down there we just kind of we just kind of pick them up and throw them down throw them away do whatever but in the meantime this creature is killing us no one ever puts together that there's a relationship between these your eggs and this mother creature and and that's the big not a big thing it's its mother bear and baby bear so if you don't going on so they're killing off all the eggs and of course of every type well when they're finally will communicated via Vulcan mind-meld they realize they can have a wonderful symbiotic relationship now this crazy creature can go through the stone like nobody's business and these people can mine and make it son more money than they were ever making before so everyone was happily ever after just stop killing eggs laid by a giant blanket now kind of interesting I think this is like this is a federation mining colony but in future episodes of Star Trek in next generation era when everything's more hammered out they they mentioned that there is no money in the future they have like Federation credits and they have everything they need but there's no profit or gain for people it's kind of it's this utopian society that doesn't need money anymore but in the meantime these guys are like oh yay we're going to be rich in the dancing around and they're letting bunny fall on their heads and everything Suze yes they're throwing this oh and just another thing that's not hammered out there I was kind of hoping expecting some someone throw a five-dollar Federation credit up in the air and let land on their head while the song money money money was playing in the background like cattle i yes they could go to the five dollar food store after after we finished this run of Star Trek you know maybe we should do a podcast detailing the adventures of Chris Elliott and get a life John the two seasons of get a life is one of the funniest episodes in American television history but that's you know as for that time um I I will agree with you probably my favorite television moment ever is when Chris Elliott decides to bore those Street hooligans straight and just in order to be one of them he turns his his beach chair around and and sits on it backwards like they do and it sinks into it yes so should we cut that whole conversation out of this er yeah probably anyway yeah that's okay no no are we done with devil in the dark yes on the errand of mercy Aaron in mercy okay further is this the first time we meet the Klingon I think it is yes Klingons first time we meet the Klingon and although they don't have the traditional Klingon makeup I think it's a great introduction to them because they're shown it's bad guys these guys are bad yet nothing nothing good luck Klingon so the Federation the Klingons kind of find themselves on the brink of war according to my little finger what what's going on is the Federation arrived in this planet or ganya and they tell our ganya hey we can we can help you we can protect from the Klingons but but we need we need you basically decides with the Federation right right and so but organizes there they're more or less they're entertaining the prospect but they're kind of like they don't really seem to see the urgency of the situation yes yes and then the Klingons come in and just take over the planet immediately yeah right I and Kirk is like what are you guys doing what's your problem yeah yeah but what Kirk doesn't understand something what we're getting through this huh so pretty quickly to the ER game our ganya is there there they only look like humans because that's the image they're projecting to the minds of the Klingons and the Federation right they're actually like beams of energy or something in their hundreds of thousands of years old and they're they're kind of way above all this and uh and I Cameron bravas episode resolved but the Klingons and the Federation stop fighting each other indeed I believe yeah I guess that's how it resolves because Organia was to be an outpost for the big war yeah it's coming and it was going to be it was good it was like yo Jima like whoever controls that controls like the Pacific region of the galaxy or something like that yeah and and so when they when they're told about the nature of these Organians they're like well we can't capture this planet neither one of us can use this planet so I guess we have no choice but to leave because we can't control these people yeah and so that's kind of how it ends they could have saved us an episode if they just introduced themselves as pure beings of light from the beginning but you know that's one of many things that happens you know or they withhold information for the suspense of us that you are kind of yeah fine go ahead and do that I guess I guess we enjoy a good mystery now I don't know if you want to watch this one again but I think you would be interested to know and I don't have I don't have reference to this but the information society song the big one tell me what's on your mind where they have the pure energy sample you know in the background pure energy got that dant adapte that's Leonard Nimoy that's a Spock sample he says if you're attending yeah it's box saying pure energy and I knew that going into this little project that we're doing and so up until now I've been kind of on my toes wondering which episode it is and I'm 95% sure it's this episode because we're spot in its where Spock says incredible captain they're beings of pure energy and it's that sample that's from the information society song so yeah I knew you'd like that remember we used to we used to listen to that song all the time on hot 94 9 ha ha ha John I still I still lock myself in my car and put it on ricci now speaking in spots though did you notice that the first half of this episode Spock is a volcanion and the second half of the episode he's a Vulcan oh no I didn't notice that they threw volcanion out a lot in the in the first season they're like oh yeah Spock he's a volcanion and you know you're like what no he's a Vulcan he's from planet Vulcan he's a Vulcan but then volcanion actually makes more sense if you're from Transylvania you're a Transylvanian right so if you're from Vulcan you're a volcanion but halfway through this episode they stopped calling him a volcanion and then I think he's Vulcan for the rest of his existence I'm also in errand of mercy uh Couric put Sulu in charge mm-hmm what's up with that that's all I got to say Sulu in charge where's Scotty Scotty should be in charge yeah and also they decide to disguise Couric is one of the native or ghanians because apparently they look exactly like human beings do ya happy very very happy coincidence is probably 1 and 5 billion trillion but Spock he doesn't look like an organ what do they do they're like oh he's a Vulcan trader instead of just putting a hat on him perhaps he could have just put a hat on him yeah and we'll see that I think on they have a spending problem in city on the edge of forever like oh oh fuck looks different and the Klingon offers Kirk a drink and we learn later in next generation that Klingons don't drink with their enemies and this is me Star Trek geeking out here all the founders of trivia about Star Trek is just pouring out of me so I get used to it god that's that's really interest I also like at the very end the Klingon says you know there could have been more and war would have been glorious so the Klingons they're pretty awesome they're just warmongering and although they don't have the ridges there they're just they're just nasty and that's what I really liked about this episode is is we finally get the Klingons and they're they're bad they're bad yes they are and then we're going to get to see plenty more than in the future so alright yeah alright on to the alternative backer which is another one of my least favorite actors I love this one I love it because I watched it like two or three in the morning I think and and I didn't have my shrooms with me but it was it was a trip man it was a trip okay well let's see I didn't really like this episode because the character of Lazarus kind of showed me crazy and because all do all of the really terrible interdimensional special effects but I will admit it kind of threw me for a surprised at the ending when you had to figure out which Lazarus he was speaking to win because you got I figured the whole time he was speaking to the same character not the case anyway go ahead and and some of this episode John and uh Lucas s okay they meet this guy named Lazarus and he's like I got a there's this bad guy and I need your dilithium crystals and oh my god she's so bad and I'm like what's your problem anyway they find out that he's going back and forth between this dimension and an antimatter dimension and so they slip through the dimensions they meet his other half his other Lazarus on the other side and the antimatter Lazarus he is pretty cool he's calm he's collected he's like uh I was afraid my counterpart in the other dimension would do that if we meet in real life if our counterparts meet then our antimatter and our matter would come together and it would destroy the universe but he's not aware of that because he's totally crazy and so they hope the antimatter Lazarus figure it out and it almost doesn't make sense because if if there's antimatter if they're going back and forth then antimatter and matter are coming together but I guess it just has to be the exact same antimatter matter is that is that how it is like it has to be both Lazarus's in the same place at once that would destroy the universe and not just Lazarus in the wrong universe that would destroy the universe I guess so but you know the only really safe place for them to be together in between the two dimensions so the same Lazarus agrees to help Monday and they trap involved in the inner dimension but the idea unfortunately is for the two Lazarus's they're going to be fighting each other for eternity well now try to a small price to pay to save to save the galaxy to save both galaxies I guess here's my a volcanism and the good Lazarus is shown to be a really excellent being because he's like he's like okay well I guess I'll spend the next hundred million billion years fighting this lunatic who is the most obnoxious person ever because you know most people would be like oh my gosh that sucks so bad I don't want to but you know he's cool about it so you gotta respect him for that yeah the crazy Lazarus is all of that as Charlie X let's be honest oh yeah yeah he's used in the Charlie X range of obnoxious people soon to be the Wesley Crusher range of obnoxious people now did you notice Lazarus's beard changed constantly maybe it's because he was two different people but obviously the crew didn't know but sometimes he didn't have a beard at all and sometimes it was total ZZ Top uh yeah I think so what long since I've seen that ups that I got a member uh seems like there was some kind of physical things that we were sick to make up on yeah there was a beard discrepancy but I don't know if we were supposed to pick up on it because the crew didn't pick up on it and they were like right next to him you know yeah I don't know anyway um and I wrote down there's a lob sysm which is the concept of that the self is all that exists or is proven to be exist oh wait how's it go so lob sysm is the concept that the self is all that exists or can be proven to exist and I can't remember why I wrote that down I think it's because that's how Lazarus felt or something like that yeah that's been a while anyway this is the lowest just for your information this is the lowest rated episode in the first season I'm pretty sure as far as as far as users or people go Star Trek fans go okay why do you mind we do that we leave is Osso though is that we're going to run into multiple dimensions in the future and the difference between one dimensions the other always seems to be a facial hair so we will see that again that's a very that's very important I can't wait to touch on that later you have to bring up wings we'll talk about yeah definitely I think we will okay so anyway alternative fact are pretty pretty groovy special effects that kind of suck but other than that kind of sucked it's a okay all right the next one is the city on the edge forever and this is one of my one of the ones I liked more in this season so what what's going on at the beginning is you got McCoy and what he has to admit there's some kind of drug in a small dose of someone mom the on the bridge and he accidentally injects way too much in himself and he goes kind of crazy bees down to this planet and he goes through a time portal right right the guardiola forever or something like that yeah yeah and so so the problem is that him going back into the past has changed the future and now Kirk and them they can't even communicate with the Starship Enterprise because it's not there anymore right right it caused some kind of according to doc Brown from Back to the Future it caused some kind of paradox in the past that that changed that erase certain things out of existence because of what happened in the past from a space-time continuum so basically when a human's off yeah so they have to go back into the past and find the coin stopping from doing whatever screwy he does so they do and it's what it looks like maybe 1930s Depression era New York City something like that that's right okay so they get there and they you know they don't fit in you've got nowhere to stay and they're immediately kind of taken in by Edith Keeler who runs like a mission right for homeless people and they buy played by Joan Collins who if you remember growing up in the 80s was was the evil biatch in the show dynasty you know and so that's how I know who she is and and in this episode she is the sweetest most angelic nicest greatest person in the world so that's kind of weird so they run into her Kirk starts to fall in love with her and Spock is making a computer out of really really old parts right I mean he basically tells Kirk he can't do it and Kirk basically orders into doing so he managed okay okay so Spock finishes his computer our least enough to give it some glimpses and they figure out that Edith Keeler was uh according to the new history the history that has been affected right by McCoy the she's a leader this huge peace movement she actually talks to of the the president and and it affects things so was what the future hinges on is whether or not she dies because they also find some record of her being killed right and and so she's are going to get killed or she's not and and they're not sure if that's prevent her being killed or if they have to allow it and of course her gloves her so he doesn't want her to have to die but what they find out is that if she allows the lid she will convince American politicians to pursue peace at all costs during World War two which has a disastrous effect America enters World War two way too late Hitler acquires the atomic weapons and bombs everybody out of existence pretty much and it's pretty horrible yeah so terrible so Spock and this this might be my favorite vice the second favorite line of the entire episode II yeah Spock says I get to Jim Edith Keeler must die as soon as I heard it I thought what a great name for a band yeah we should we should I that should be our band we can we can send garage band tracks back to back and forth to each other and and we can call our band even must die how does that sound okay we'll be just like postal service except Wilson yeah yeah we'll suck way harder but that's okay our name is our name would be so much better than Postal Service which is one of the weakest names of band history yeah so they end up letting her get hit by a car right I think it's while she's supposed to be on a date with Captain Kirk and and they find a McCoy who we mean tiny and likeness of the whole thing it's very it's like a slow-motion end of untouchables kind of moment where we're McCoys like oh hey Jim Kirk hey here's Edith kilakila isn't she great and only gone she is a kid was gonna die and then and Kirk has to hold McCoy back preventing McCoy from saving her very trying on it says what are you doing I could have saved her which you know you got a wonder the only reason she gets hit by the cars because she's distracted by McCoy anyway so McCoy hadn't gone back into the past why would she had been hit by the car who that's a very good point huh yeah but anyway Perry maybe she yeah who knows but so it it's terrible tragedies that they have to willingly let her die but as soon as that happens how do they get back to the future John they jump through the portal where's the port they show somebody show them coming out the other end ha ha ha good so then they get back to the future and there's a better bride um yeah I know that's that's a really good point too I guess I guess they all just decide to jump together and in the process of them jumping together enabled them to come back to the future somehow but very good point I suppose the time Guardian just brought him back when when he was done because they had the people back there and they're like oh by the way could you uh could you just bring those guys back when they do what they're supposed to do and I'm Guardian he's a really nice time Guardian he's just kind of letting him just go through time and he's like okay sure so good all good thing to have although since they already discovered a way to go back in time did they really need another way to go back in time pretty much anything you do in the future take you back in time you got a black hole you got a slingshot around the Sun who you got the cold starting of the of the dinah lithium engines yeah and you've got the guardian of forever all of those things send you back in time you pretty much can't like walk outside your front door in the future without going back and it's very dangerous yeah I think in this case they had use at the time Guardian because I the sorts of enterprises are just here guys maybe they were marooned on the planet no that's true that's true and I would have taken forever for them to hitchhike get a ship tell the ship to go around you know the sign of the ant okay yeah so it was convenient it was nice yeah what it would have been a two-parter otherwise ha ha all right John here we are on the very last episode of the season yeah I just look good man I'm just going to say you ride off with that operation violate kind of week yeah because because it was like old fried eggs that was a yeah exactly I and I know when we get spotted like a member how Spock survives but go ahead and and someone yep so they go to this planet everybody like every other planet they co2 is controlled by something and and they go and they find these little fried eggs dot two places and they're like oh my gosh these things they're weird let's get out of here and so on the way out one of them at acts Spock ya know when they when they meet people on silent know that people like run out them with sticks right that's in room time I attack them and I think the fear is that one day someone will build a bigger stick with a bigger nail nails big enough to destroy the planet but yeah I mean so so that's what the creatures are doing turns out they discover Spock is infected with this thing so he's kind of controlled too and he puts through great amount of pain like this thing causes in pain but these things they're not individual creatures but they're all individual cells of a big giant brain is yeah kind of inferred that that's that's what it is and this brain came from a long way away and it's and it's absorbing creatures and and they got to put a stop to it because you know it's already infected several other like planets and so the Spock is in sickbay and because he's a Vulcan because Spock is better than all humans he's able to withstand and kind of overcome the power of this thing and they go down and they and they capture one of these little slug things and even though it's just it's just this little dumb rubber thing they can't kill it they can't figure out any way to kill it and so they think back and when they first entered the system there was this guy who was flying a solo ship into the Sun and the last thing he says is I'm free I'm finally free and so from that Kirk says okay there's something about the Sun something about the Sun that killed this thing what could it be and so for several days or something bones and Spock are working on on what it could be the like they try eat and they try radiation and they try all sorts of crazy things but nothing works and then after several days or whatever crit goes what else is somewhat of the clock it's bright it's bright and you got behind it prompted me to think really they couldn't think that the Sun was bright and that's one of the first things they thought of like within five minutes it takes them several days or seven hours and they in a and they can't figure anything out but anyway that's the thing it's either infrared rays or ultraviolet rays or some kind of some kind of brightness some kind of light spectrum that kills these things and so they test Spock out and Spock's like you know the people down there won't have the kind of eye protection and just even if you close your eyes it's the brightness that they think up it's so bright that it would just it would fry you anyway even yeah if you close your eyes and so they touched down on Spock and Spock's relieved of the creature and then right then I think nurse Chapel runs in and says we got the test results back it looks like it's just infrared rays that they kill these things we don't have to do anything harmful to anybody at all like Oh Spock we're so sorry but because you late Spock is blind yeah but then the exacta planet and all these things they they all shrivel up even the ones underneath buildings they shrivel up and the day is saved except Spock's blind but turns out he's not blind that's right John because Vulcans have a second pair of eyelids correct they have second pair of eyelids which I guess is on the inside of their eye it's an inner eyelid and it prevents them from it prevents them from going blind I guess and their super-strength prevents them from being taken over and they're super logic prevents them from not being the smartest beings in the galaxy and a nerve pinch prevents them from ever getting attacked by anybody and their incredible strength prevents them from not ever getting beat up and their incredible intelligence prevents them from not being anyway the list goes on but in some volcans they can't be stopped everything about that is absolutely perfect and that Stepan I learned from operation annihilate oh that encourage brother died L curse what died his brother died that his brother died yeah remember his brother died yeah he was on the colony but no one really cared about him Kurt didn't really seem to show too much emotion about the whole thing I think we're going to learn in the second season that we think Spock gets killed a number of times like you said you he's invisible he's a Christ figure of Star Trek yeah all right so that's operation and I like John I'm going to say that episode is about average for the season I'm kind of open to end the season on a big thing and really that that episode was just average but they make up for because the very first episode of season 2 is a home run buddy and we'll get there next time and what is that is that a mock time I believe so come on trot okay good good to know it's time to recap a little bit say what our favorite episodes were of this little session now I've done something kind of unique here I win on IMDB and users have rated individual episodes remember how I told you the alternative factor was the lowest rated I've got the ratings for every episode we've gone over so far so I'm wondering if your favorite episode or episodes corresponds to this fans who voted on IMDB or not so go ahead and tell me what your favorite episode is of this set that we did mm-hmm okay this is top um I am probably going to say the city on the edge of forever with Spacey coming in close second Spacey just because of I mean just watching it I started to realize the cultural significance of that episode and I got really excited about the implications of what that episode meant but as far as the an episode standing on its own to feed the city on the edge of forever is probably my favorite okay good good call good call I'm going to say personally well you know I have this huge huge affinity for return of the archons it's like my favorite Star Trek episode right I'm going to go with return of the archons on this and probably in second I think I'll be space seed second okay which you know it's kind of when I first lost spacy does a kid and like really this spawn the movie but you know what it's just awesome there's just so much good dialogue in that one and and Ricardo montalbán he s macho he has macho good anywho oh hey babe Rio just walkin and so I'm gonna go with that and you know what you're correct with your guesses Citians on the edge of forever that actually won it was a nine point three out of ten and it was the highest rated of the ones we went over probably the highest rated episode yeah I believe in a lot of lists that I've looked up on the internet sitting on the edge of forever is often voted as the best original Star Trek episode period yeah yeah so you're right on that and you were also right with Peter mita he'd got a 9.0 this is a second memory still thick yeah she's she's she's pretty sick I'm Maria get better James let's do better and grow up so anyway that's me Owen by the way return the archons got a seven one it was kind of average and not too great but it's my favorite so so they're all right now that we're done with the first the whole first season yeah well John I went from from what would you say a I'm kinda I don't know if you would say I'm having the the Saul of Tarsus journey here but I probably would have actively participated in the persecution and now that I'm done with the first season not going to be going out and buying my communicator just yet or my Star Trek uniform but I'm pretty enjoyable not the full conversion yes yeah yeah no you're probably going to have a relapse anyway so yeah yeah who knows so anyway we want to talk about the entire proceeding here at favorite episodes of the entire first season you know I really want to say that the city on the edge of reverence is my my favorite episode but I think to be quite honest best episode of the first season I'm going to have to go with the conscience of the king really sitting on the edge of forever number two they see number three and let's say bounce of Tara number four and because five is a nice round number well I'm just going to make it four okay yeah no five for rounder number it's round okay yeah I'm probably going to go with um well of course return the archons I love because it's perfect on me and oh I'll never buy it um okay the enemy within Oh enemy within okay yeah I think you and I feel mostly the same I think I'm I'm gonna say return the archons first and then probably space seed and then probably conscience of the king I would say and then you didn't like Galilee of seven months but I really like that because it was a little both sides of Spock okay and see what else did I really like just to be different from you I'm gonna go with the taste of Armageddon just because I kind of like the concept the predicament that particular planet was in and the questions asked about warfare and sacrifice and stuff like that okay and is that four or five was that four or five oh yes that is definitely four or five if it's four I'll just I don't know I'll just say much lemon or something's Mudds women oh if it's fine oh no not not much women Muslim inside sound okay all right three least favorite episodes let go with Charlie extra sure yes definitely um the korba might maneuver or Cora yeah that one man and this is tough either the alternative factor devil the dark I think the alternative factor John I that maybe might be favorite because I must have looked at my watch so many times just waiting for that stupid episode ed yeah a rehashed a lot of the same footage and everything to so oh it felt like you've seen the plan 9 from outer space right oh yeah all men it's like they just you know that there's a part in that movie where the aliens describe solar night which humans are about to create and it's going to destroy the entire world and I swear one of the humans right after the monologue in begin says do you think you could describe that solar night stuff again perfect and then he's done he does he explains it all again and so it's kind of the same thing the alternative factor just never ended okay anyway those are my favorite episodes least favorite okay for me it's Charlie X definitely and I didn't like shore leave remember I talked about how I didn't like shore leave yeah and so that's right up there and maybe kind of in a similar vein of Charlie X maybe the squire of gothos yeah because I can only take carbs chords so much and I can only take that accident so much so I think I think I'll probably leave it at that I didn't I forgot to watch tomorrow's yesterday so maybe I that sounded pretty bad the way you described it but or at least uneventful yeah there's nothing worse than an that's why I'm not going to vote for alternative factor because it was eventful that negative stuff some of the it was more laughable than anything but at least it you know it held my attention yeah sometimes when something doesn't hold your attention it's far worse than that so I'm gonna leave it at that okay okay so anyway next week we're going to be doing we're going to be starting the second seat in that house how's that sound odd sounds good let's see I probably about halfway through watching it and I've got a couple couple more discs coming the mail so so we'll we'll see alright this past week since I'm so well prepared today I discovered I I didn't tell you this but I discovered a really cool thing and that's called the public library which I don't - and I got the whole first season it was free and oh so they're all they're all here with me right now so tomorrow I'm just going to go back and I'm going to get the whole second season I get to keep it for two weeks and it will give me plenty of time so I think I'll be prepared next week all right sounds good okay so um anyway in Salt Lake City I'm John Manson live long and prosper chance all right in my bar jay-ar is offered on encounter oh god I was really good I figured you know you started it so oh boy do our dope end up in the Bing no actually you know what I put our last joke in again like after the N theme usually kind of is a kind of as a an outtake okay thank you a couple of outtakes in at the end all right so but know that one definitely isn't going to wind up in all right well we weren't deleting that right now we were discussing this side of paradise and
